Mission & Program Goals
Mission
Aquinas College offers a Liberal Arts Program in the Catholic tradition. The program is
directed to the perfection of the mind through the acquisition of knowledge and intellectual virtue.
The faculty seek to assist students in coming to a mature knowledge of themselves and of their human
potential, nurturing their personal capacity for Truth and Goodness. It is the aim of the Liberal
Arts Program to provide an integrated college-level curriculum which enables students to understand
that Truth is one, and that they have the ability to discover it in its many dimensions.
Program Goals
The Liberal Arts Program seeks to foster in students:
- An understanding of the basic doctrines of Christianity as taught by the Catholic Church.
- A knowledge of the history and principles of philosophy in the Western tradition, emphasizing the
relationship between philosophy and theology, and stressing the rational foundation of ethical action.
- The ability to acquire, critically analyze, and document information and to communicate it effectively.
- The capacity to recognize beauty, goodness, and truth, and to appreciate the contribution the creative process
makes to the development of human culture.
- The ability to reason mathematically, to conceptualize, and to apply mathematical logic in problem solving.
- An awareness of the major contributions of science as well as the ability to apply scientific method in the
acquisition of knowledge.
- A Christian understanding of man and society, emphasizing the history of Western Civilization in general and
of the United States in particular.
- A knowledge of other cultures, societies, and religions from the perspective of Christian faith so as to gain
a deeper understanding of the forces shaping contemporary persons and societies.
- A practical respect for the good of the human person in his entirety, that is, for his physical, mental and
spiritual well-being.
