Raising Strong Daughters and Virtuous Sons
Margaret Jones Meeker, M.D.
Northern Michigan Medicine and Pediatrics
Whether they know it or not (or show it or not), girls and boys need their parents' help in navigating a toxic culture. For girls, medical data shows that the most important influence impacting decisions about whether or not to be sexually active or to use alcohol or drugs is her father and mother. In order for girls to internalize healthy beliefs about themselves--to know that their bodies, spirits, faith, and hearts are worth protecting--they need mom and especially dad to impress upon them how very valuable they are. And although boyhood may not be what it used to be, for their part boys need to know that drinking, taking drugs, and having sex outside of marriage aren't "normal" teenage behaviors but reflect abnormal socialization. By helping their sons to understand the importance--and manliness--of virtue, parents can raise mature, confident, and respectful boys--even in today's culture.
Dr. Margaret Jones Meeker has been a private practitioner of child and adolescent medicine and a medical educator since 1988. She is the author of several books including Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons; Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters: Ten Secrets Every Father Should Know; Your Kids at Risk: How Teen Sex Threatens Our Sons and Daughters; Epidemic: How Teen Sex Is Killing Our Kids; Questions Kids Ask About Sex: Honest Answers For Every Age; and Restoring the Teenage Soul. Dr. Meeker is also a contributor to the Complete Book of Baby and Childcare, high school science text books, and various professional journals such as Physician and Psychologies (UK).
Dr. Meeker earned her bachelor's degree at Mt. Holyoke College in 1979 and her M.D. at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1984. After completing the Pediatric Residency Program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, she taught in the Tufts University Pediatric Residency Program at Baystate Medical Center. She currently teaches in the Munson Hospital Family Practice Residency Training Program.
A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the National Advisory Board Medical Institute, Dr. Meeker has presented at various national conferences such as the Conservative Political Action Conference, the National Leadership Summit on Abstinence, and the National Youth Workers Conference. She has appeared on several nationally syndicated television and radio programs including Dateline NBC, The O'Reilly Factor, The Today Show, ABC's 20/20, CBS's 60 Minutes, Heartland with John Kasick, Dayside with Linda Vester, CBN's Living the Life, Dr. Laura Show, Dave Ramsey, BBC's American Virgins, NPR, Oprah and Friends, Teresa Tomeo's Catholic Connection, Michael Medved, and ABC's Satellite Sisters.
