In an effort to reduce unneeded paperwork, instructors will no longer have to complete an official SLS referral form as of Spring 2009. Students in need of tutoring must come to SLS and sign a tutoring referral. Once a student has requested services the Director or Assistant Director of SLS will contact you directly by email to notify you of the request. You may submit any comments or instructions for the tutor by replying to the notification email. We appreciate your prompt reply.
The instructor is encouraged to give sufficient comments and specific instructions to help direct the tutor in providing the needed services. In addition, any relevant data, such as test scores, particular troubled areas, upcoming exam, etc., should be forwarded to SLS. Instructors may request that the tutor contact them for further direction.
After each tutorial session a Tutor’s Report will be emailed to the instructor and student’s advisor. The tutor and tutee will determine if additional services are needed, and the next appointment will be scheduled and noted on the Tutor’s Report. The Tutor’s Report is designed to inform you of the next scheduled appointment as well as the progress of the student. For group sessions only one report will be completed and emailed to the instructor. The instructor will be given a list of the students who attended and any other appropriate information on individual students.
During the initial tutoring session, the tutor will assess a student’s academic and study skills needs and develop a plan for services. Individual, small and large group sessions will be scheduled on a weekly basis. All students receiving services are required to come to each session prepared with specific questions for their tutor. Failure to come prepared may result in the canceling of a given session. All tutored students are encouraged to attend study skills seminars during the semester.
Any questions, comments, or suggestions are welcomed throughout the year and should be directed to the Director of Student Learning Services. A survey will be distributed to instructors each spring in an effort to evaluate tutorial services and to provide additional feedback.
