Student Learning Services Guidelines

Student's responsibilities to receive free tutoring services include the following:

  1. Contact instructor of course for individual assistance.
  2. After meeting with the instructor, the student completes the top half of the Student Learning Services, (SLS) Tutoring Referral Form. Forms are available in the front lobby, in the SLS area, and from the Director or Assistant Director of SLS.
  3. If approved by instructor for services, student needs to make and keep scheduled appointments with the Student Learning Services (SLS).
  4. The student needs to sign and date the referral form, and then the instructor will complete the bottom half of the form.
  5. Please note that by signing the referral form the student gives Instructor permission to discuss their academic performance with SLS.
  6. Student also accepts full and sole responsibility for completing the course requirements.

The SLS will do an initial assessment contact with the student to discuss needs and get input on services. At that time an appointment for tutoring will be scheduled. Also, all tutored students can be scheduled to attend a study skills seminar to enhance general study skills. After the tutoring session, the tutor will determine if additional services will be needed and if so, the next appointment will be scheduled. Usually students are scheduled for weekly 1 hour tutoring sessions.

Other student responsibilities include:

  • The student may be given assignment to complete prior to the tutoring session.
  • Student is expected to abide by the Standards of Conduct regarding academic honesty and integrity as outlined in the Aquinas College Student Handbook.
  • If student misses 2 or more appointments he or she may be denied services at the SLS Director or the tutor discretion.
  • Lastly, student's responsibilities also include evaluating their experience for the SLS.

Any complaints or concerns regarding SLS should be discussed with the Linda Nagle, Director of Student Learning Services, at (615) 297-7545, extension 441. You may also discuss any issues with the SLS Assistant Director, the Director of Student Affairs, or the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
