SLS Tutor Guidelines

The Director and Assistant Director of SLS, professional tutors, and academically successful peer tutors will provide tutorial services to any Aquinas student who requests assistance. Peer tutors will be recruited to provide tutoring to specific students based on academic background, academic success, and demand for services.

Tutor Responsibilities

  • Abide by the Standards of Conduct regarding academic honesty and integrity as outlined in the Aquinas College Student Handbook. Tutors may not in any way give any student an unfair advantage by either explicitly or implicitly discussing test content.
  • Sign a Tutor Confidentiality Agreement.
  • Implement the instructions provided by each student’s instructor..
  • Attend all Tutor in-service and training sessions during the semester.
  • Maintain a professional academic atmosphere during each tutoring session. Tutors are Aquinas College employees and should not make any negative comments regarding any instructor’s teaching or testing style.
  • During the initial session with a student assess his/her content needs, review study skills best practices, develop a plan for service, and schedule a follow-up appointment. )
  • Review relevant material prior to tutoring sessions.
  • Attend all scheduled tutoring sessions. Arrive on time or early.
  • Wait fifteen (15) minutes before marking a student as a “no-show.”
  • Assist students in identifying problem areas through question and answer techniques.
  • Use examples to demonstrate concepts and theories and provide opportunities for practice.
  • Assess students’ academic study skills, make suggestions, and model effective techniques.
  • Immediately report all suspicious or troublesome activity or behavior to the Director of SLS.
  • Confirm the next scheduled session prior to the end of the current session.
  • Contact students in advance if you have scheduling conflicts.
  • Maintain accurate and objective records of student performance.
  • Complete and submit tutor reports within 24 hours of each tutoring session. Contact the Director of SLS if the report will be late.
  • Distribute tutoring satisfaction surveys to students once a semester. Allow students to complete the form confidentially.

Special Notes Regarding Group Sessions:

For group tutoring sessions, only one report needs to be completed. Please include a list of ONLY the students who attended the group session and note any other appropriate information on individual students.

Did you know?

After the tutoring session, the tutor will determine if additional services will be needed.
