Online Catechetical Workshop:
A Principled Approach to Catechesis
Description
Many times if you are a Director of Religious Education, you quickly become a Director of Religious EVERYTHING! It is difficult to know where to begin with regards to prioritizing and renewing specific ministries. Throw into the mix the call to evangelize those who are not active in our ministries and programs and we can quickly become overwhelmed. Many times parishes ask the question, “How do we…get more students, increase our intentional disciples, etc.?” This should not be a starting point for parish evangelical or catechetical endeavors. Instead, the fundamental disposition should be, “What does the Church ask of me (us)?” Our Lord has entrusted his mission to the Church and we have a participation in that mission.
We also know we cannot keep the status quo if our parishes are declining. We need to do all we can to bring people to Christ, but Pope St. John Paul II reminds us, “It is not therefore a matter of inventing a ‘new programme’. The programme already exists: it is the plan found in the Gospel.” (Novo Millennio Ineunte, 29).
In order to sustain parish ministry beyond personalities, programs, and trends, it is important to structure and organize parish ministries according to firm principles. These solid principles do not necessarily come from our own creativity, but from our Mother, the Church.
In each session of this two-part workshop, we will look at five principles that will guide parish ministries according to the Church’s mission to bring people into communion with Christ. This will not be an exhaustive list by any means, but will provide ten solid principles that can guide our work to be fruitful and faithful. Our goal is to think with the heart and mind of the Church in accomplishing her mission.
This is a two-part workshop for parish and diocesan DRE’s and catechetical leaders. We will meet both days for about an hour and half with as much time as need for questions, answers, and comments.
We will be offering this two-part workshop at two different times. The cost of this workshop is $20 and you will receive the workbook at the beginning of the workshop.
