Lecture, Fr. Allan White, O.P.

This lecture is part of a week-long celebration of the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas. Fr. Allan White, O.P., a Dominican of the English Province, will discuss the Holy Preaching of St. Thomas Aquinas and the art of fellow Dominican, Fra Angelico. Fr. White draws from his depth and breadth of knowledge of religious history, Dominican life and preaching, as well as decades of personal scholarship. Aquinas is pleased to welcome Fr. White to Nashville as a guest lecturer.

About Fr. Allan White, O.P.

Fr Allan White O.P. is an English Dominican.  He met the Dominicans during his time as a student at Trinity College in the University of Oxford, where he read Modern History, In 1973, he entered the Order and having completed his novitiate and first years of philosophical studies, was sent to the Dominican house in Edinburgh to read for a theology degree in the University of Edinburgh. He was ordained priest in 1979 and returned to Blackfriars, Oxford, to complete theological studies and to teach.  In 1980 he returned to Edinburgh to write a doctorate on sixteenth-century Scottish religious history.  On being awarded his doctorate he remained in Edinburgh as university chaplain, parish priest of the university parish, superior of the Dominican Community and lecturer at Gillis College, the diocesan seminary.  He moved to London in 1989 and became editor of New Blackfriars for four years, continuing his teaching at Blackfriars, Oxford and Allen Hall, the Westminster diocesan seminary in London.  In 1991 he moved to Oxford and was involved in teaching and financial administration before being appointed assistant chaplain in the University of Oxford 1993-94, and then Chaplain in the University of Cambridge in 1994.  He was elected Provincial of the English Dominicans in 2000 and served in that capacity until 2008.  In that year he was appointed socius to the Master of the Order for the provinces of north-west Europe and Canada. In 2011 he moved to St Joseph’s, Greenwich Village in New York City.  From 2012 to 2015 he served as Director of the Catholic Center in New York University.  In August of 2015 he moved to southern California where he serves as Rector of St Mary’s School and works in the parishes of Saint Mary and Our Lady of Guadalupe, El Centro.
