Tour of the Synagogue

April 16, 2013 @ 2:30 pm3:30 pm

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

“I had heard of severe measures against Jews before. But now it dawned on me that God had laid his hand heavily on His people, and that the destiny of these people would also be mine.”

The House of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross will lead a tour of Congregation Sherith Israel on Tuesday, April 16 from 2:30–3:30 p.m. Meet in Aquinas Central at 2:30 to carpool. Sherith Israel is a century-old Orthodox synagogue about a mile up Harding Pike/West End from campus.

St. Teresa Benedicta, born Edith Stein in Germany in 1891, grew up in an observant Jewish family, although becoming an atheist in her formative years. She converted to Catholicism at the age of 30 and became a Carmelite nun at the age of 42. In 1942, fleeing Nazi persecution in the Netherlands, she was captured as an ethnic Jew and died at Auschwitz.
