Fr. Allan White, O.P. to Present Lecture on Art and Preaching

Posted on Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Aquinas College resumes lectures this January 28.

Fr. Allan White, O.P.

Aquinas College continues its tradition of providing free public lectures on theology and evangelization with a Dominican flair. This January 28 Aquinas welcomes Fr. Allan White, O.P., a Dominican of the English Province and scholar of religious history, to speak on sacred art and preaching in the Dominican Tradition. ‘Christ the Father’s Art’: Aquinas and Fra Angelico on Preaching and Painting the Word Incarnate will be held at the St. Cecilia Motherhouse, January 28 at 7:30 pm in the St. Dominic Oratory.

Fra Angelico is widely known as a master medieval painter of Gospel scenes on the walls of the Dominican priory at San Marco. Angelico’s altarpieces depict colorful and contemplative scenes, drawing the viewer deeply into contemplation of the Word through art. Fr. White will explore the preaching of Aquinas and Angelico as two approaches to sharing the Truth of the Word.

The lecture will take place on the first day of St. Thomas Aquinas Week, a celebration of the Angelic Doctor at Aquinas College. Mass at St. Jude Chapel for the Aquinas community will begin the celebration at 11:20 a.m. on January 28. Various mini-lectures and activities throughout the week are listed at www.aquinascollege.edu/events.

“We are delighted to be able to welcome Fr. Allan White to preach at the Mass of St. Thomas Aquinas and for the evening lecture,” said Sister Thomas More, O.P., Vice President for Academic Affairs and organizer of St. Thomas Aquinas Week. From the response so far, the Nashville community is delighted, too. Promotion of the event has been a joint effort of the local chapter of the Dominican Laity, the Diocese of Nashville Adult Formation Office, St. Cecilia Academy, and Aquinas College.

Seating is limited. Seats can be reserved at www.aquinascollege.edu before January 25.
