Sister Mary Leonard, O.P.

On Sunday, July 14th, we had the joyous occasion to celebrate Sister Mary Leonard, O.P., as she marked her Diamond Jubilee, commemorating an extraordinary 75 years in religious life.

Sister Mary Leonard has been a cornerstone of the Aquinas College community, dedicating over three decades of her life to the institution she helped establish. From the founding of Aquinas College in 1961 until she departed Aquinas in 1994, Sister Mary Leonard’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the college and its many generations of students.

Affectionately known as the “Queen of the Biological Sciences,” Sister Mary Leonard’s passion for science and her commitment to education were evident in every lecture and interaction. Her tenure at Aquinas College was distinguished not only by her expertise in biological sciences but also by her role as Dean of Students. In this capacity, she provided unwavering support and guidance to the student body, embodying the values of compassion, dedication, and academic excellence.

Sister Mary Leonard’s legacy extends far beyond her professional achievements. She is remembered fondly for the life lessons she imparted both inside and outside the classroom. Her genuine love and concern for each student created a nurturing environment that fostered both personal and academic growth. Sister Mary Leonard’s influence has profoundly shaped the lives of countless students, leaving a lasting impact that continues to be felt throughout the Aquinas community. Notably, Sister Mary Leonard is the sole surviving member of the original group of sisters who inaugurated Aquinas College in 1961.
