Aquinas College Opens New Academic Year with Mass of the Holy Spirit

Posted on Tuesday, September 2, 2025

On August 26, the Aquinas College community gathered joyfully to open the new academic year with the Mass of the Holy Spirit, a tradition observed every year since the college’s founding in 1961.

The Most Reverend J. Mark Spalding was the principal celebrant of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, with Father Mark Chrismer concelebrating. New seminarians of the diocese, who are studying at Aquinas College, served at the altar with reverence, while student Sisters formed the schola, lifting hearts to God through their beautiful sacred music. Sister Cecilia Anne, O.P., President of Aquinas College, extended a warm welcome to students, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors, Board members, and many friends of the College, all of whom filled the Aquinas Center for the liturgy.

The Mass began with an academic procession, in which faculty and members of the Board processed in full academic regalia, a visible reminder of the union of faith and reason at the heart of Catholic education.

In his homily, Bishop Spalding reflected on the gift of the Holy Spirit, who brings wisdom, courage, and joy to all who seek Him. He encouraged students and faculty alike to remain open to the Spirit’s promptings throughout the year, allowing their studies and work to be transformed into a path of holiness.

Following the Mass, the bishop blessed a new monstrance and two celiac chalices, generous gifts from benefactors to support the College’s liturgical life. Father Chrismer proceeded to bless each of the three College buildings.

The celebration concluded with a festive luncheon, where the College community and guests enjoyed fellowship and good food, giving thanks for God’s abundant blessings.

As in every year since its founding, the College once again entrusted its academic endeavors to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, beginning the year rooted in prayer, tradition, and joyful communion in Christ.
